Re: Extend your influence by extending trust: a social story 2 days ago
So true. Amazing how often the simple thing just so happens to be the smart thing.

Re: Gary Vaynerchuk’s #1 thing small businesses should do to leverage social media a week ago
You are so right: caring for people makes life work.

Re: Gary Vaynerchuk’s #1 thing small businesses should do to leverage social media a week ago
Thanks for stopping by, commenting, and sharing on Twitter! You're right. Hearing the author read his own book is so much richer.

Re: Knowledge is not power a week ago
True. But, there's something about harkening (and hearkening) to the enduring authors to help make a point.

Re: Inception, Extraction and the Socialization of Business a week ago
Plant the seeds. Nurture until harvest. Care for the soil throughout. Good stuff from inception until completion.

Re: Knowledge is not power 2 weeks ago
Thanks Chris.Ran across something on Edelman Digital's homepage that summed it up nicely, "We want to find stories at the source." Beautiful. Sounds like the role of a story prospector to me.Can't wait to be back in your country in two months!

Re: Reciprocal Altruism: P&G’s secret marketing sauce? 2 weeks ago
Thank you John. Whenever a company who spends more on research each year than some countries produce in a year, it does have a little force of persuasion behind it.

Re: The Future of Public Relations and Social Media 2 weeks ago
Good definition of good PR. Seems like that'd apply quite beautifully across quite a few "communications" industries. Thanks for sharing the "good example" piece re: Flipboard.

Re: Optimizing your Customer Acquisition Funnel 3 weeks ago
Wow. Not only very thorough, but extremely well illustrated. Great example of a teaching blog post—would make for a perfect two class period lecture. Thanks for sharing such good stuff.I discovered you through a comment by James on a B2BBloggers post: http://www.b2bbloggers.com/blog/5-steps-to-keep-the-sales-funnel-flowing/ #comment-67424098

Re: 5 Steps to Keep the Sales Funnel Flowing 3 weeks ago
Thanks James. Especially appreciate the link to David Skok's work. The concept of the sales funnel has been most useful for me in the up-front, or planning stage, conversations with clients. For some reason, thinking through the marketing-to-sales process and hand-off is a missing phase of business planning. Primary benefits of the funnel:• getting clients to see things from the prospect's perspective• getting clients to see marketing as an ongoing PROCESS of engagement• helping clients grapple with the need to NURTURE prospects and customers• helping clients understand the need to create different types of content (i.e., not everything needs to have an offer and push for a financial transaction)Most clients I work with are still struggling with basic data systems. Believe it or not, many businesses do not even have basic contact management software. Even less have formal data collection systems, email marketing systems, or analytics. Asking them to set up a multi-stage contact analysis system might just overwhelm them. Several online contact managers emphasize sales funnel tracking. Salesforce.com has a wonderful graphic on their website illustrating a workflow to match the funnel. Maximizer, ACT!, Goldmine, and Oprius have something similar. By the way, to illustrate what I mean about folks not have a basic contact manager, look at the incredibly popularity of HighRise by 37Signals.com and then understand what HighRise actually does. It'll be an eye-opener about where many businesses are on the data curve.

Re: Let’s Connect a month ago
Thank you. I've found the original source. Shows just how much your book has influenced my thinking. I've now rewritten to actually be a quote versus a living paraphrase, and have cited you.

Re: Let’s Connect a month ago
Quoted and cited you here: http://treypennington.com/2009/09/26/how-to-influence-others-hint-its-not-sequential/ Now looking back through notes to find "faith." I think you wrote about "faith" in the same work, The Story Factor. I'll find and properly adjust/cite momentarily.

Re: Every company needs a Sheriff Woody: a toy story a month ago
Thanks. Both versions are well done. I haven't yet reached a conclusion about the whole 3D or 2D thing. Enjoyed Toy Story 3 both ways (to see if with all my children, we had to go two different times). I was happy with both Ds. SO true about classical storytelling! Thank you for pointing that out.

I am up to my ears in sick-tired-teething-bronchitis-having-temper-tantrum-throwing toddlerdom. I've been home from work for the past two days with this very, very cranky boy who refuses to eat and then melts down at the slightest thing because he's so obviously hungry and can't deal! But try to feed him? That occasions another tantrum. As does not being able to do outside on demand, not getting to play with knives, not getting all the milk he wants all day long, and many other extremely mysterious slights and frustrations. More of the day has been spent in tears than not today, and it's been all I can do to hold back my own.Read more comments by Trey Pennington

Book nostalgia a year ago
@parisienne, I actually love Goodnight Moon too. And I don't get the bowl of mush -- I mean hasn't the bunny already brushed his teeth? But my favorite thing about it is the bizarre insertion of "goodnight nobody" and the blank page into the goodnight recitation section. I mean, what? Yes, let's just introduce the concept of total nothingness into a children's book, out the blue. It seems existential to me. But as a kid, I loved Ferdinand, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear.Read more comments by Trey Pennington

Cautionary tale about meds and breastfeeding a year ago
Erica, this sounds terribly horrible and I do thank you for putting this information out there. Even if it's not a typical baby reaction to zoloft-in-breastmilk, the fact that it could happen to your baby means that there are probably other moms out there going through the same thing and having no idea why.And I second the frustration with medical professionals who are so blase about prescribing stuff to nursing moms. I went to a dermatologist 6 or so months after my son was born for some skin issues I was having, and told him I was nursing (his question: how much longer are you going to do that? Like, enough already, lady, your son is 6 months old). So he gave me some prescriptions, told me they were safe for nursing, and I went off to the pharmacy where the pharmacist clarified for me that the medications were not "safe" but were in the "C" category or whatever it is, the category of things you probably shouldn't take unless you absolutely have to, though there's not KNOWN adverse affects on baby but there's also basically no research. The point being, the doctor was an ass and cavalier about the nursing. Thank God for the pharmacist.Read more comments by Trey Pennington

Kindle books on laptops, iPhone coming soon along with international versions a year ago
I don’t see them selling Kindle books (at least not yet) to non-Kindle owners — only enabling sync for people with Kindles who also want to read those books on their phones. A little elaboration here: http://www.readerville.com/index.php/blog/view/the-359-iphone-kindle-app/But the idea of them selling Kindle books to people in other countries isn’t really even possible. Rights to publish books are negotiated on geographical lines, so until that changes, Amazon can only sell the books within those same geographic confines. It’s one of the things that will have to change with the whole ebook revolution, but it’s between publishers and authors — there’s only so much Amazon could ever do about that. (Apart from generating original content and negotiating rights to sell it globally. But still, that’s a ways off and going forward; wouldn’t apply to existing books.)Read more comments by Trey Pennington

Whoa: Mercury in HFCS a year ago
@chaya, our Whole Foods has a ketchup from the brand Organicville that is made with agave nectar sweetener, not HCFS. I don't have the bottle in front of me, so I can't say if it is kosher. But my son loves it as much as any sugar-laden stuff.Read more comments by Trey Pennington

Q&A: banking cord blood a year ago
I too was feeling guilted into banking cord blood, but I talked with my midwives and read some stuff by the American Academy of Pediatrics and became convinced that: 1) the health promises are pretty much bunk for the child whose cord is banked (their genetic woes will be in the cord blood and it will therefore be useless). The AAP has a FAQ section on cord banking and they recommend public cord donation, not private banking. The link is here: http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/jan07cordbloodfaq.htm ; 2) private forms of medical banking such as this are bad public policy that further create divides between the medical haves and have-nots, so we should donate our cord blood instead to public banks that make cord blood available to all those who need it regardless of their ability to pay. In the end, that's the best public policy. Read more comments by Trey Pennington
